A Memorable Gathering of Martial Arts Excellence in Northern Ireland

Introduction

The Ju-Jitsu N.I. (J.J.N.I.) made a remarkable impression at this year’s UK Bugei Winter Course, with a strong representation by four of its accomplished instructors. This annual event, well-regarded within martial arts circles, took a significant step this year by relocating from its traditional venue in Morecambe to Northern Ireland, presenting new opportunities and experiences for participants and organisers alike.

Course Relocation and Hosting

Breaking from tradition, the 2025 Winter Course was hosted by the Golden Dragon Martial Arts Club, based in The Loup, Magherafelt. This change of venue made the event more accessible to local clubs like Bangor Ju-Jitsu Academy, Antrim Ju-Jitsu Academy and Golden Dragon Martial Arts and fostered a sense of community and camaraderie amongst practitioners across the region. The course was meticulously organised by Master Darren Dougan (5th Dan), Chief Instructor of Golden Dragon, whose efforts ensured the smooth running and overall success of the event.

Distinguished Line-up of Instructors

The Winter Course boasted an impressive line-up of seven instructors, each bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the mat. The instructors present were:

Participation and Activities

Over fifty students, both children and adults, took part in the Winter Course. Under the guidance of the instructors, students had the opportunity to learn, practise, and perfect a variety of Ju-Jitsu techniques. The dynamic sessions emphasised practical skills, discipline, and mutual respect—key tenets of the martial art.

In a special afternoon session, parents and spectators were invited to experience Kyujutsu, the art of Japanese Samurai Archery. This engaging demonstration allowed attendees to gain insight into another aspect of traditional Japanese martial arts, fostering a greater appreciation for the discipline and focus required in Kyujutsu.

Conclusion
